Connection - Multiplayer on PC
Please be aware that Green Hell is based on the host-client system, which means that the Host of the given multiplayer session is the “server” of the entire session. Please note that any stability abnormalities with the connection between the players will impact the game.
If you’re experiencing problems connecting to your friend, Connection error, Timeout error, Desync issues, or disconnections, please perform the troubleshooting steps below along with your friend:
Reset your router
Reset the router according to the manufacturer's instructions. Do not only turn them off and on.
Try connecting via different internet connections
You can do so by trying the ethernet cable, or even - for testing purposes - you may try a mobile hotspot!
Antivirus/Firewall
Make sure to add Green Hell and Steam as exceptions to your antivirus software, including Windows Defender, and do not only to turn off the antivirus. You can try to add them to your Firewall as well.
Perform a clean boot
In order to do that, please follow the steps here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/how-to-perform-a-clean-boot-in-windows-da2f9573-6eec-00ad-2f8a-a97a1807f3dd
Run Steam and/or Green Hell with administrator rights
In order to do that:
Locate the executable file (default path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\GH.exe - the path may vary depending on where you have installed the game);
Right-click on the “GH.exe” file and select Properties.
Click the Compatibility tab.
Check the Run this program as an administrator box.
Click Apply.
Running Steam with administrator rights is also advised (the default path of the .exe file is: C:\Program Files(x86)\Steam. You should look for a “steam” file marked as an application).
Mods
In some cases, mods may interfere with the game, so if you are using them (or using a Mod Manager), we advise you to check your connection after removing mods from the game.
Ensure your internet provider is not blocking any ports necessary to enter the game (e.g., for Steam or local ports).
If ports are blocked, you can forward them - you should find more information on that on your internet provider’s website.
VPNs
Some VPNs or proxies can alter your connection path and cause issues with multiplayer sessions. If you have an active VPN service or any other proxy, please temporarily disable it and test Multiplayer again.
UPnP
Verify if your router supports the UPnP option and try to turn it on. If you're unsure how to do that, please contact your ISP, and they should explain the process to you.
Metered Connection
Make sure that your connection is not metered. You can access this option in Settings > Network > WiFi/Ethernet > Your connection > Metered connection > OFF
NAT Type
Ensure that your NAT type is not set as Strict on your router's website. This NAT Type can limit the Multiplayer functionality in Green Hell.
Path
Ensure that Green Hell is installed in a path that is not restricted or hidden. It will prevent blocking files that need to be accessed by the game.
Windows
As a last resort, you can try to match your Windows Time and Region settings to the person who is trying to connect in your Multiplayer game.
You can do that by Settings > Time & language > Region & Date/Time > and sync it with a friend’s region.
Killer Network Manager
There is a program called „Killer Network Manager“, which is currently pre-installed on some systems, that uses the Killer Network Chip. Stopping/disabling the service appeared to be helpful in the case of many gamers. Please note that Killer Network Manager is a network management suite. It's a set of programs that allows you to manage your network and prioritize the network resource usage of applications. If you don't have this particular program, check for other equivalents of this software that might be on your PC.
However, if the situation won’t stop, you can try this potential workaround while we're working on that error. Please be aware that this troubleshooting will cause you to not be able to get some of the progression achievements on the old save files you have made. If you're still interested in that option, please follow the guides below:
Disable Steam Cloud for Green Hell (to access it, please select Steam > Settings > Cloud > Disable Steam Cloud) and for Green Hell (Green Hell > Properties > Steam Cloud > Disable).
Enter/Find following path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[your unique Steam ID]\815370\remote
(Please be aware this path may vary depending on which disk you installed your Steam.)Delete the “ACHIEVEMENTSDATA.dat” file. Please make sure to backup your files before deleting them (you can copy the file to the desktop).
Try to connect in Multiplayer again to see if you're still experiencing difficulties.
After that, you should be able to turn on Steam Cloud again and sync your local files with the cloud storage.
