Audio & sound difficulties
The most recent drivers for your sound card should be installed on your PC to ensure the game works correctly. You can download those drivers from the site of the card producer. We recommend using stable drivers certified by WHQL. Using beta drivers may result in unexpected issues that we won't be able to address.
Sound Card
To check your sound card, press [WINDOWS] + X > Device Manager > Sound. Download the latest version of the drivers from an according website:
- Realtek: https://www.realtek.com/Download/List?cate_id=593
- C-Media: https://www.cmedia.com.tw/support/download_center
- ASIO: https://asio4all.org/about/download-asio4all
- Dolby Atmos: https://www.dolby.com/about/support
Driver Update
You can also update a Sound Output Device Driver by:
- Pressing Windows Key + R and typing in the new window “devmgmt.msc”.
- Pressing Enter.
- Right-click on your Default Audio Device, then click “Update Driver”.
- Click “Search automatically for drivers”.
- Windows will automatically search for drivers and install them if needed!
Refresh the drivers
You can also force Windows to refresh the driver:
- Open Device Manager > expand Sound, video, and game controllers > right-click your main device > Disable device > then Enable device again.
- Please note that you will have to restart your PC during this troubleshooting step.
Clean Boot
- To perform a clean boot, please follow the steps here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/929135 The above actions should make sure that no other software or game overlays interfere with the game.
Default Device
- Right-click the sound icon > Sound Settings > make sure your primary playback device (your headset or speakers) is set as Default Device.
Port
- Change the USB port - if you're using a front panel's daughterboard, try connecting it directly to the motherboard, as there may be some sort of difficulty with their communication.
Game Files
- Verify the integrity of the game files (in your Steam Library, right-click on StarRupture > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Files).
However, if the situation still persists, you may need to try to bring back the default settings option to the game. Please note that this method includes file manipulation, and if you’re not comfortable with performing these steps, please skip them:
- Turn off Steam Cloud (Please select Steam > Settings > Cloud > Disable Steam Cloud, and for StarRupture select StarRupture > Properties > Steam Cloud > Disable).
- Enter/Find following path: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\StarRupture\StarRupture\Saved\Config\Windows Please be aware that this path may vary depending on which disk you installed your Steam on.
- Delete the “GameUserSettings.ini” file. Please make sure to back up your files before deleting them (you can copy the file to the desktop).
- Enter the game and check if the sound came back.
- Make an action (e.g., change some settings in Options) - it will create a new Settings file.
- Close the game.
After you complete the steps, you can turn on the Steam Cloud, which will automatically back up your save files and the new Settings file. On the prompt that should appear, select "Upload to the Steam Cloud” for the local files. If the prompt is not shown right away, you can try to verify Steam files: https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/0C48-FCBD-DA71-93EB
Please be aware that the provided troubleshooting will reset all settings changed in-game options to the default.
Please ensure that you have followed every step of the troubleshooting guide before contacting the support team.
